The government will be opposing these amendments. Let me just say right up front that our Senate voting reforms have everything to do with the principle that the results at a Senate election should reflect the will of the Australian people. In putting together these reforms, the government has based the reforms on the unanimous recommendations of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, which inquired into the conduct of the last election. The Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters focused its voting reform recommendations on Senate voting. It did not identify any problems that required changes to the method of voting for the House of Representatives.
