My question is to the Minister representing the Minister for Home Affairs, Senator Watt. Minister, did you or your department seek or receive advice from ASIO or the Australian Federal Police before granting more than $68,000 to the Islamic Multicultural Youth Centre, also known as MyCentre, which has been linked by United Arab Emirates prosecutors to the suspect in the flydubai terrorist hijacking?
Murray Watt Queensland, Australian Labor Party, Minister for the Environment and Water
Thanks, Senator Hanson, for the question. Minister Burke and his department have been looking into this, and the government's position is that we expect all organisations that receive government funding to conduct themselves in line with guidelines and funding agreements and in accordance with the expectations of the Australian taxpayer. If any activities breach these, the funding will be reviewed. All multicultural grants programs are administered in accordance with the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles, the Australian Government Grants Framework and the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act.
Senator Hanson, what you're referring to involves allegations that a pilot involved in that recent incident on that plane may have had some connection to an Australian organisation. The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which comprises the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and ASIO, has confirmed that it is investigating the man's links to Australia. As an investigation is underway, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment more broadly. What I can say, though, is there is no current threat to the community or public safety here in Australia. We trust our agencies to do their jobs and help keep Australians safe.

You didn't answer the question. Minister, did you or the department receive any security advice, undertake any Google searches or review the Facebook pages for any of the organisations receiving your multiculturalism grants before giving them taxpayer money?
Murray Watt Queensland, Australian Labor Party, Minister for the Environment and Water
Senator Hanson, if I have any further information to add in answer to your question, I'll provide that. More broadly, I can certainly say that our government does not make any apologies for investing in multicultural communities. We support multicultural communities. I know that's not the position of the One Nation party, which believes in a monoculture, whatever that is. I don't think anyone's been able to quite work out what that is at this point in time. We support multicultural communities. As I said in my first answer, we expect organisations that receive government funding to follow guidelines, follow funding agreements and comply with the expectations of Australian taxpayers.

Relevance to the question. Did they receive any security advice? That is the direct question.
Murray Watt Queensland, Australian Labor Party, Minister for the Environment and Water
The only other thing I'll say on this matter is that I've seen One Nation's comments about the need to deport hate preachers. There have been suggestions made that there may be a connection between an alleged hate preacher and this pilot. We all remember that earlier this year there was one party that didn't vote for the legislation to deport hate preachers, and that was Pauline Hanson's One Nation party.

You need to look at the rest of your legislation, which would have taken away freedom rights from the people of Australia. That's why we wouldn't support that rubbish legislation. Minister, are any of the organisations that have received nearly $400 million in multicultural grants awarded by the Labor Party since coming to office under any form of investigation or monitoring by ASIO or the AFP?
Murray Watt Queensland, Australian Labor Party, Minister for the Environment and Water
Thanks, Senator Hanson. Just before answering this question, I'll just pick up on what you said before when I pointed out that your party, Pauline Hanson's One Nation party, voted against our legislation to enable the deportation of hate preachers. I know you're sensitive about that.

Relevance to my question. He's got one minute to answer it.

Senator Hanson, when I invited you to put your second supplementary, you started off talking about the legislation. The minister is entitled to take that as part of his answer. If you don't want him to make comment, don't mention it.
Murray Watt Queensland, Australian Labor Party, Minister for the Environment and Water
Senator Hanson, I know you're very sensitive when your hypocrisy is pointed out in here. You've pointed out that there were other aspects of that legislation that you did not support. I can only assume that that was the measures we imposed to crack down on Neo-Nazis, because that was one of the central aspects of that legislation that was involved as well. Was that the bit you didn't like? You didn't like deporting hate preachers. You say it was because of other issues. Was that because you had problems cracking down on Neo-Nazis? I can't see any other reason why you would have voted against that legislation. Even the Liberal and National parties voted with us to make it easier to deport hate preachers, and yet you have the hide to come in here and ask questions about taking more action against hate preachers. You're a hypocrite.

Minister Watt, I remind you to direct your responses to me.
