I seek leave to amend general business notice of motion no. 25 standing in my name and in the name of Senator Milne for today relating to the UN Human Rights Council resolution on Sri Lanka and the call for Prime Minister Tony Abbott to raise the need for an independent investigation of violations of human rights with the Sri Lankan President at CHOGM.

Leave granted.

I move the motion as amended:

That the Senate—

(a) notes the United Nations General Assembly Human Rights Council resolution encouraging the Sir Lankan Government to conduct an independent investigation into allegations of violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, as applicable; and

(b) calls on the Prime Minister (Mr Abbott) to raise the matter of an independent investigation into allegations of violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law with the President of Sri Lanka at the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo.
