I present a response from the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory (Mr Mills) to a resolution of the Senate of 22 November 2012 concerning conviction records.

The response read as follows—

Thank you for your letter dated 26 November 2012 regarding the Senate resolution calling on Australian states and territories to enact legislation to purge convictions imposed on people prior to the decriminalisation of homosexual conduct.I advise that the legislative policy for the Northern Territory concerning historic criminal records or repealed offences is contained in the Criminal Records (Spent Convictions) Act. The practical effect of a spent criminal record is that the record will not appear on a criminal history check (except in relation to certain excluded matters).

Again, thank you for bringing the Senate resolution to my attention.
