The primary purpose of the Crimes Act Amendment (Forensic Procedures) Bill (No. 1) 2006 is to address specific impediments raised by states and territories that have prevented the exchange of DNA profiles on a national basis. The amendments will allay the concerns of states and territories and so encourage all jurisdictions within Australia to commit to interjurisdictional DNA profile matching. The amendments also, among other things, address the recommendations contained in the Senate Legal and Constitutional Legislation Committee’s report. I wish to place on the record the government’s appreciation of the work of the committee. I commend the bill to the Senate.

Question agreed to.

Bill read a second time.
