Workplace Relations

Somewhere in Australia right now there's a young retail worker. Let's call her 'Amanda'. She has a casual contract and a set rostered shift, but her manager has directed her to stay back after hours to continue stocking the shelves. She isn't sure she's going to get paid for it because she wasn't paid for the same last week. It's been a too-common story—until now. The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association have shown us why workers need to unionise. The SDA have carried Amanda's story and 32,000 others like hers into the Federal Court against corporate giant ALDI, where a worker on their own would struggle—and they won. The Federal Court has approved a settlement of $55.2 million after years of failure by ALDI to pay for work done before and after shifts.
If you are working, you should be paid. The SDA's work continues, fighting for superannuation for workers under 18, fighting for worker protections from AI, fighting for a share for workers in productivity gains, fighting for better leave and fighting for stronger action against abuse and violence in retail. I join them in that fight. Together, through the Fair Work changes, we have strengthened workers' rights. People like Amanda deserve to be paid for the work that they do. Just as Labor fights in this place, the SDA are fighting across Australia. (Time expired)
