I've got a confession to make to the House. I enjoy watching reruns of Seinfeld, and I've got a hunch. I've got a hunch that the Prime Minister does too, but there's a very different reason, because I watched Seinfeld for a few of the laughs, but I think the Prime Minister is watching Seinfeld for some political advice, because Seinfeld character George Costanza has a famous line: remember, it's not a lie if you believe it. This prime minister is loose with the truth. He's a bit deceptive. He casually misleads parliament and then refuses to say sorry when he gets caught.
Before the election, the Prime Minister ruled out changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing 50 times. He promised a $275 reduction in power bills 97 times. When the Prime Minister was caught out failing to declare an honorary membership of the Marrickville Golf Club, the same golf club that just happened to get a $6 million grant under a dodgy invitation-only grants program, the Prime Minister channelled his inner George Costanza—'Remember, it's not a lie if you believe it.' So he said the grant was for sewerage works, even though department officials confirmed that simply wasn't true. This is a Prime Minister who constantly gets caught out fudging the facts. Does anyone believe the story about the $5 honorary membership? The Prime Minister says he handed that back. But he kept the honorary membership to the Royal Sydney Golf Club worth $30,000. Well played, George, well played!
