Few responsibilities are more important than keeping children safe on their journey to and from school. In my electorate of Sturt, 25 schools will benefit from new 40-kilometre-per-hour school speed limits by the end of this year, helping make that journey safer for local students and their families. Delivered through a partnership between the Commonwealth and South Australian governments, this initiative will reduce vehicle speeds around schools when children are most likely to be travelling to and from class. It's a straightforward change but one that can make a real difference where it matters most—around our schools.
The new speed limits will also bring SA into line with other states that have already adopted lower school zone speed limits, helping to create safer environments for students, families and school communities. In Sturt, seven of the 25 schools receiving these new speed limits are located on or near Portrush Road. As one of Adelaide's busiest arterial and freight routes, Portrush Road carries significant traffic volumes every day while also serving thousands of students and families. By reducing speeds during school drop-off and pick-up times, drivers have more time to react, risks are reduced and children can move through these busy areas more safely. There's no single solution to road safety, but measures like this make a genuine difference. For families in Sturt and communities across Australia, these new 40 kilometre-per-hour school speed limits are a practical investment in safer journeys and safer school communities.
