House debates Bills
Domestic Gas Reservation (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2026; Second Reading
Bob Katter Kennedy, Katter's Australian Party
Are we talking about my amendment?
Andrew Wilkie Clark, Independent
Thank you, Member for Kennedy. Because of your amendment, the matter is contested and unresolved. That will now be referred to the main chamber for it to go to a formal division. This is a cognate debate, so we've now gone to the accompanying bill. As there are no more speakers, just to be clear, I'm putting the question on the accompanying bill, that this bill be now read a second time.
Question agreed to.
Bill read a second time.
If no member wishes to consider the bill in detail, I'll put the report question immediately. The question is that this bill be reported to the House without amendment.
Andrew Wilkie Clark, Independent
Does the member for Kennedy wish to speak on the consideration in detail?
Bob Katter Kennedy, Katter's Australian Party
Well, yes. As I understand it, I'm entitled to do that.
Andrew Wilkie Clark, Independent
Member for Kennedy, we've moved on to the second of the two bills. The first of the two bills, which I understand you have an amendment to, has been referred to the main chamber, and we're now on the consideration in detail, seemingly at your request. Do you wish to consider this bill in detail and make a statement of some kind?
Bob Katter Kennedy, Katter's Australian Party
If we're going to discuss this proposal in the House, then I'm happy to go with the flow. But I need assurance—
Andrew Wilkie Clark, Independent
Member for Kennedy, just resume your seat for now. Minister?
Madeleine King Brand, Australian Labor Party, Minister for Northern Australia

I may be able to assist the member for Kennedy. The bill we're onto now is the second of the package of three bills. The bill that you've moved an amendment to is the first bill, the Domestic Gas Reservation Bill 2026. That will be debated in consideration in detail in the main chamber tomorrow, and that will be the opportunity that I think the member for Kennedy is seeking.
Bob Katter Kennedy, Katter's Australian Party
And this change that we want in there—
Madeleine King Brand, Australian Labor Party, Minister for Northern Australia
That will be circulated.
Andrew Wilkie Clark, Independent
Member for Kennedy, please. Through the chair, you have the call.
Bob Katter Kennedy, Katter's Australian Party
I just want clarification from the minister that the issue of price will become part of the bill. That's our amendment, and I can't see any reason why the government shouldn't accept that proposal. I think you're onside with us. You've already done it in Western Australia, so we would like very much for the government to accept a little tiny amendment there that guarantees the price. The price is the issue. If we could clarify that, please, we then won't take up the time of the House here or in the other place.
Madeleine King Brand, Australian Labor Party, Minister for Northern Australia
I totally accept the member for Kennedy's intent here, but we will wait to see these amendments that have been circulated and we'll look at them and debate them tomorrow. In the meantime, if we could deal with the two accompanying bills that I think we're going through a process of dealing with, then we'll move onto that consideration in detail in the morning. I believe that is the plan.
Andrew Wilkie Clark, Independent
Yes. Member for Kennedy, just to be clear, we've reached the consideration in detail of the second bill, so I think we're going to just rewind a bit and I'm going to say: if no member wishes to consider this bill in detail, I will put the report question immediately.
Ordered that this bill be reported to the House without amendment.
