Winter always hits hard, whether it's here in Canberra or in my electorate of Bonner in south-east Brisbane. The people who feel it the most are those who are down on their luck, sleeping rough or experiencing financial hardship. This year I began the inaugural Bonner blanket drive. I made the first donation of three new wool blankets, and I'm encouraging Bonner residents to do their bit and donate a blanket to my office before the end of July. To raise awareness for national Homelessness Week, I've invited the Assistant Minister for Community Housing, Homelessness and Community Services, the Hon. Luke Howarth, to help me distribute the blankets during the first week of August. We will be donating the blankets to Rosies Friends on the Street in Wynnum and to Bernie's Place at the Mount Gravatt Community Centre. Both organisations undertake tremendous work in our community and I'm a proud supporter of their ongoing efforts in Bonner.

I have been blown away by the number of locals who have already dropped into my office in Wynnum to donate blankets. I'm pleased to represent such a thoughtful community, and it's the generosity and kindness of others that helps when times are tough. So let's keep the momentum going. The blanket drive finishes in two weeks. Just yesterday, Martin and Sarah drove over from Cannon Hill with five new blankets. Last week, Jonty, a local Moreton Bay Boys School student, donated a couple of blankets. They don't have to be brand new. As long as they are in good condition and clean, we will accept them with open arms. If you'd like to make a donation, head to my office in Wynnum. A big thank you to the locals who have already donated. (Time expired)
