I rise today in support of Australia's veterans, returned servicemen and -women, and ex-service men and women. There are three issues I think that need to be discussed clearly. First was the debacle, which was the $5,000 allied health issue. I have no idea why that cap was there. It was a bad policy when it came in. It didn't last. It was put aside. It should never have happened. The second thing is what on earth is going on with Victoria Barracks? How can you come into one of the icons of Australia and—I don't know what you intend to do with it—turn it into a theme park? Do we realise how pertinent that is to the defence of our nation and to the iconography of Sydney that it sees its attachments to the Defence Force? It's somewhere I believe even my grandfather, who was in artillery and came over here from New Zealand, spent some time with as a servicemen. It means so much to Australia. It's an absurdity.

The final thing is the so-called Frontier Wars, the wars of Australians against Australians. This should not be in the Australian War Memorial. This is an outrage. The Australian War Memorial is for Australians who served overseas and domestically in protection of Australia, not in some sort of domestic issue. No-one in an Australian uniform was ever directed by an Australian officer to serve in that conflict. Just don't do this to us.
