Environmental Conservation
Mark Dreyfus Isaacs, Australian Labor Party

I rise today to recognise the talented students from my electorate of Isaacs, whose artwork was shared with me by the Australian Conservation Foundation as part of the Wild At Art threatened species competition. I am really impressed by their creativity and their passion about the need to protect Australia's unique wildlife. Their paintings and drawings are a wonderful reminder of the important role young people can play in these conservation efforts. Australia's environment, from our coastlines to waterways and bushland, need to be protected, and climate change is a major threat to our native species. The Australian government is committed to preventing further extinctions and recovering endangered wildlife. We've protected an extra 95 million hectares of land and ocean. More than half of Australia's ocean waters are now protected. To the students who entered the competition: your artwork shows that you care deeply about our wildlife and its future. I encourage you to turn that passion into action. There are many groups you can volunteer with who care about nature and work together to protect it. You could contact Junior Landcare with a parent or carer to ask about ways to get involved. Your family and friends will be proud to see you using your creativity to speak up for a cause that you believe in. I certainly am.
