Rural, Regional and Remote Australia: Services

I make this statement on behalf of the member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines, to continue her work. She has been a tireless advocate for equitable access to health care, regardless of where Australians live. Regional communities face critical shortages of GPs, specialists and allied-health professionals. Families are travelling hundreds of kilometres for essential treatment, facing long waiting lists and paying significant out-of-pocket costs. The member for Indi previously called our attention to the $9.23 billion annual health spending gap between metropolitan and regional and rural Australia. Where you live should not determine the quality of health care you receive, but there's no single fix. We need a coordinated approach that improves access and affordability, and injecting more spending in health is where it starts. The member for Indi has proposed a $2 billion building regional and rural hospital fund, a fully costed plan to help regional hospitals replace ageing infrastructure and plan for the future. In the member for Indi's words, regional Australians aren't asking for special treatment, just the same access to health care as everyone else. Today we stand together to carry that work forward. On behalf of the community of Warringah, I would like to join my community to the community of Indi in putting this request to the government.
