Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 4) Bill 2026; Consideration in Detail
Tim Wilson Goldstein, Liberal Party, Shadow Treasurer

Thank you, Speaker, for the consistency we're getting now in decision-making from the House, so that we can have free debate. I simply cannot understand: the member for Wentworth has laid the groundwork for higher taxes on her constituents and of course constituents in Kooyong, Curtin, Warringah, Wentworth and other seats, like Bradfield, and now they're trying to patchwork it and cover up the tracks of the higher taxes that are being imposed on small businesses, on innovative businesses, by making relatively minor amendments about structural problems. The issue and the challenge we face right now is that early-stage startups, innovative businesses—those most likely to contribute to economic growth, future jobs and employment, particularly in sectors like artificial intelligence, biotechnology and technology overall—have put their faith in the member for Wentworth. What has happened in practice is that the Treasurer has played her like a fiddle on these tax reform measures. As a consequence, all those businesses are now paying higher taxes.
