The Australian Labor government is committed to rebuilding our industrial base. We want to be a country that makes things. Anyone who lived through COVID or is looking at the disruptions caused by the Iran conflict can see that we need more resilience and more sovereignty through making more things here. Aussies don't want our nation to just be a farm and quarry, and our landmark gas reservation scheme will help achieve this goal. Requiring gas exporters to reserve up to 20 per cent of their exports will ensure that our domestic gas market is always modestly oversupplied. This will secure the gas we need, pushing down prices for households and industry and delivering real change for Australians. Today is an historic day with the passage of this legislation through the House.

This is Australian gas and it should be available to Aussies first, whether it's Australian households or Australian industry—Australian resources working for Australians. Australia has always been a country that makes things. For generations, workers in our factories, smelters, refineries and workshops helped build this country, and the government is committed to rebuilding our industrial base. We know that countries that make things are stronger. Australia has the workers, resources, energy and ideas to build new industries here, and we have a plan that is delivering. Our Future Made in Australia policies are delivering real results. Led by this prime minister, we're fighting every day for Aussie jobs and Aussie industry, and all of this supports well-paid, secure jobs, especially in regional communities.

The gas reservation scheme is an important next step in our plans, delivering a reliable supply of affordable gas, driving new manufacturing investment and protecting existing capability while giving certainty to LNG exporters. This is Australian resources powering Aussie jobs and driving Aussie manufacturing and Australia's long-term security and resilience. Australian industry needs a reliable supply of gas and greater certainty of the future, and this legislation will secure the gas we need.

We're working constructively across the parliament to get this legislation passed, but this legislation is a test for the parliament. A vote against gas reservation is a vote for higher gas prices and fewer manufacturing jobs. If you're pro manufacturing, you need to be pro gas reservation. If you're pro jobs, you need to be pro gas reservation. A vote against gas reservation is a vote against jobs and a vote against Aussie manufacturing. It's time for all senators to decide which side they're on.
