Australians deserve honest leadership, not a prime minister who repeatedly breaks his promise. First, he promised $275 off power bills. Then it was no changes to capital gains tax or negative gearing. He promised to support small businesses, and he also promised the arts sector a producer tax offset. He has failed to deliver on every one of these promises.
Australia's arts sector is a national treasure, creating jobs, attracting investment and telling our stories, yet Labor's failure to deliver its producer tax offset is pushing productions and opportunities offshore. Get this—despite this being a key election promise, not only have Labor failed to deliver it but instead chose to charge ahead with their $77 billion in new taxes that nobody voted for. As a result, we've seen award-winning Aussie producer Tom Blackwell forced to choose between filming his $30 million feature film here at home or sending all that investment, along with 1,000 jobs, straight over the ditch to New Zealand's more competitive industries.
In Senate estimates last night, we were told this legislation remains a priority, yet the Assistant Treasurer denies that, citing competing priorities. Treasury's had 30 opportunities to legislate this promise, yet nothing has been delivered. The government needs to start delivering the reforms it promised to keep our screen industry competitive and now.
