For democracy to succeed, people need to be able to trust their government. They need to be able to trust that if a government promises that their energy bills are going to be $275 cheaper as a result of policies they enact then that promise is based on some pretty rigorous and stress tested modelling. They need to trust that there's a likelihood that it's going to happen. When a prime minister is asked before an election, 'Will you rule out changes to the capital gains tax discount or negative gearing?' and he answers, 'Yes, how hard is it, for the 50th time?' then people need to be able to trust that those changes won't be made and the government won't renege on their promise after the election. They need to be able to trust, when the Prime Minister gives an explanation about a grant that was awarded to a golf club of which he is a member, that the information in that explanation is correct. They need to be able to trust, when the government says they have real, lasting plans for cheaper mortgages, that subsequent government spending is not going to drive up inflation, leading to 16 straight interest rate rises and therefore significantly more expensive mortgages. They need to trust that when the Prime Minister makes a mistake or breaches their trust he comes clean. The Albanese government has breached the trust of Australians, and the real question now is, why? Why do Australians always pay the price because the Prime Minister can't ever admit he has made a mistake?
