There's a lot that comes with being an elected representative. Most of it is incredible—the people who let you into their worlds; the chance to provide help and support; the moment when an outcome you've been advocating for finally comes to fruition and you know it will make your community stronger and more connected. This role is so often filled with light, optimism and collaboration, but there are also times when it is clear that the dial on political discourse has moved.

Like many of my colleagues in this chamber, particularly the women in this place, I have been subjected to horrendous abuse and threats of violence both online and in person, and our teams feel the impact as well. I've been screamed at in my face, had a bike nearly thrown at me and received a number of violent threats. Our appearance is critiqued and we are told constantly to get back in the kitchen. These people don't want people like me, people like us, in this parliament. While these voices may seem loud, we keep going. We keep going to be the voice of the communities we love.

My favourite thing about being the member for Gorton is being in and amongst my community. Being accessible and approachable is at the very heart of this role because that's how we hear what matters most. As elected representatives, we're not asking for an environment without differences of opinion, robust debate or high emotion; we want the certainty that we can do our jobs safely, because when we have that certainty that's when we can do the best for our communities.
