Every parent knows the feeling of wanting to keep their children safe. But, for Bruce and Denise Morcombe, the unimaginable happened, when their 13-year-old son, Daniel, was abducted and murdered in December 2003. Daniel should have had a lifetime ahead of him. Instead, his parents turned their unimaginable grief into an extraordinary legacy protecting children right across our country. This week I had the privilege of meeting with Bruce and Denise here in parliament, together with many of my colleagues from all across our parliament, and their courage, their determination and their unwavering commitment to ensure that what happened to Daniel never happens to another child is absolutely inspirational.
Through the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, they have helped educate generations of Australian children about recognising danger, seeking help and staying safe. Their message is simple but powerful: recognise, react and report. In 2004, the Albanese Labor government continued this parliament's commitment by supporting, through a $2 million investment, the foundation's vital child safety work, including Day for Daniel, which is this Friday. I encourage all Australians to wear red this Friday and support their important work.
