As I was saying, there was recognition across parliament that action is needed, and while views may differ on particular mechanisms, there is increasing agreement that the status quo has not delivered the level of energy security Australians deserve and that manufacturers need. Securing more Australian gas for Australian consumers and Australian manufacturers at a reasonable price should be a bipartisan objective.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Senator Susan McDonald and members of the opposition for their constructive engagement in relation to this package of bills. I want to acknowledge the contribution made by the member for Wannon during yesterday's debate. He recognised both the importance of these reforms and the importance of getting them right. We will continue to discuss the legislative package in good faith with the coalition and indeed any member of parliament or senator who wishes to do so.
This is a reform that will shape Australia's energy security for decades to come, and one that will deliver the greatest and most enduring benefits for Australians if it is supported across this parliament. Ultimately, these bills are about ensuring Australian gas delivers for Australians. They will provide greater certainty for households, businesses and industry, strengthen Australia's energy security and establish an enduring framework that recognises a simple principle: Australian gas should benefit the Australian people. I commend the bills to the House.
