A new book entitled Mulligas and Cudjeries: Stories to Heal Us brings together local elders and young people to share stories of the stolen generations and the impact that that history continues to have on Territory families today. I acknowledge Grassroots Action Palmerston, the Mulligas and Cudjeries elders group Intrepid Designs and the young people who helped create this wonderful book. I have visited Grassroots Action Palmerston and seen the care and the trust built with young people. That same trust is at the heart of this book. Young people sat with elders and learned from their lived experience, and the artwork accompanying these stories brought together generational storytelling, speaking honestly about children being forcibly removed from family, culture, language and country, and why the young generations need to understand this history.
Thank you to the elders for their trust, and congratulations to the young people and everyone who helped bring Stories to Heal Us to life. Stories like these remind us why truth-telling matters. I want to acknowledge the contributing elders: Bernie Hunter, Netta Hunter, Henry Hunter, Rosie Baird, Shirley Cousins. Lesley O'Brien, Robert Birch, Faye Latcha, Rickie Latcha, Joyce Peris, Gloria Saxby-Ryan, Annie Chenery, Rosalie Lalara, Margaret Cooper and Anne Lange. Congratulations also to all the illustrators and everyone who brought this book together.
