Before we move to further statements, I will give a short statement to the House. Like so many Australians, I've struggled to comprehend what happened a week ago to our beloved colleague Helen. We all know Helen as a respected parliamentarian, a dedicated local member and, above all, a decent person. But in this place, where we often disagree, Helen has always shown that respect and courtesy go hand in hand. The Helen Haines I know is someone who always asks, 'How are you going?' and someone who treats everyone, regardless of their title or position, with genuine warmth and respect. Helen embodies these values every day.

There is much discussion on how we as a parliament can work on showing respect to one another. Today I again say that this is a moment for all of us to rise to the challenge. I want this. Many of you have told me this. Most importantly, Australians want this. We must be able to disagree with respect, as the Leader of the Opposition has said. That's the heart of democracy. A number of suggestions have already been made by members about how to respond, including those advocating for a civility pledge. This is a personal decision, and I encourage all members to continue these discussions, to decide the best way for themselves.

Like many members, I valued Helen's friendship, her counsel and her commitment to making our parliament better. I could always count on Helen when I'd had a particularly difficult day or if I needed a bit of extra encouragement. That's just Helen. Today my thoughts are with Helen and her husband, Phil, along with her family, her staff and the people of Indi, who love and admire her so deeply. On behalf of the House: Helen, we are thinking of you, we are praying for your quick recovery and we look forward to the day you return to this place and I get to say the following nine words: 'I give the call to the member for Indi.'

The question is that the motion moved by the Prime Minister be agreed to. I give the call to the honourable member for Warringah.
