I was deeply saddened to hear of the attack on Helen Haines and the injuries that she sustained. While Helen and I represent different parts of Australia, there is much that connects Indi and Braddon. After Braddon, Indi is the next largest electorate by geographic size. Both electorates are proudly rural, made up of communities that stretch from small regional centres to very remote locations. They are high-mileage, worn-shoe-leather electorates where much of that job is spent out on the road listening to people, visiting towns, attending local events and understanding the challenges and opportunities facing our diverse communities. Both electorates are underpinned by primary production and are now growing in new directions with renewable energy generation. Both are strengthened by vibrant and creative community networks and sustained by volunteers who so often wear two, three or more hats to keep their towns thriving. Families who have lived there for generations stand alongside newcomers, who have chosen to live, work, play and learn in some of Australia's most remarkable landscapes.

The outpouring of love and support by Helen for her community tells us a lot about the person she is. It tells us that she has worked hard to earn the respect that she commands. It tells us that the people of Indi see themselves in her. It tells us each that she has earned her place as a trusted representative who listens, shows up and understands the needs of her region. Most of all, it tells us that what motivates Helen is making sure her community is stronger, fairer and more inclusive. That is the Helen we know as our colleague: a determined advocate, a respected representative and someone who is deeply committed to the people she represents.

My thoughts are with Helen and her husband, Phil, as well as their family and friends and her staff, who have stood beside her and supported her and the family through this event. From the communities of Braddon to the communities of Indi, we wish her the very best for her recovery.
