Jim Chalmers Rankin, Australian Labor Party, Treasurer
2:38 pm
The member for Riverina said that he was thinking about the issues raised by One Nation today. They are all antisuper because they are all antiworker. It's that simple. They would swing a wrecking ball through the retirement incomes of millions of Australian workers.
They don't back workers and they don't back first home buyers either. That's why I think the shadow treasurer will probably be relieved to have been thrown out a moment ago because I heard him ask a question of the housing minister about house prices. It just so happens that I've got a quote here—a transcript—of what the shadow treasurer, in a podcast on 14 July 2021, said about house prices. Would you like to hear what the shadow treasurer said? 'I've said quite publicly that I'd like to slow the growth in the price of housing,' and he's got the nerve to ask about house prices. Then, he says that he wrote a whole book about it because, 'What we're creating is intergenerational inequity.' Quite right.
The housing market and the tax system are making things less fair in intergenerational terms, and this government has got the guts to do something about it. We're making the housing market fairer for first home buyers, we're cutting income taxes, and we're helping with the cost of living because we know people are under pressure. We are also reminded today that One Nation, the Liberals and the Nationals would cut super and they would make cost-of-living pressures worse, not better.
