Last week I was pleased to host the Minister for Industry and Science, the Hon. Ed Husic, in my electorate of Hasluck, where I was able to introduce him to our vibrant and innovative local businesses: Nickola Estate and Oakover Wines. Situated on Whadjuk lands, these historic wineries reside in the beautiful Swan Valley, the second-oldest continuous wine-growing region in the country, with the first vines planted in South Guildford in 1830. The Yukich family settled in the area, and Nikola Yukich planted the first vines there in 1929. Today, Graeme Yukich and his family continue to make award-winning wines but have also transformed the estate into a multifaceted operation. The minister observed the winemaking process: from testing in the laboratory, the huge stainless steel fermentation vats and the barrelling in the wonderful old cellars, through to the bottling, labelling and capping of those bottles.

But there is so much more: award-winning coffee blends—roasting, packing and distribution—cheese and continental food import and distribution, contract wine production and bottling, and even a wedding chapel and concert venue at the sprawling Nikola Estate. The Yukich family provide a great example of innovation and value adding, and in so doing they're providing employment and training opportunities for local residents and contributing not just the local economy in my electorate but to the vitality and continued growth of the Swan Valley tourist region, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year.
