Commonwealth Electoral Amendment Bill 2016; In Committee

The government will be opposing this amendment. The Greens' amendments on sheet 7882 propose appropriate arrangements for the commencement of the bill, which the government will support. Those Greens amendments will ensure that the Australian Electoral Commission has enough time to implement the measures contained in this bill before an election with a polling day after 1 July 2016. This is consistent with the evidence provided by the Australian Electoral Commissioner at the recent inquiry into this bill by the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters that he would require about three months to implement the reforms in this bill.
