The contributions made during this debate highlight a shared recognition that Australia's migration system must be equipped to respond sensibly and decisively when circumstances overseas change in ways that may directly affect the integrity and sustainability of our system. This bill demonstrates the government's commitment to protecting that integrity and ensuring Australia can manage temporary visa travel in periods of international conflict or sudden global disruption.

As I understand it, the amendments in this bill will establish a new legislative framework that provides the minister administering the Migration Act with powers to more effectively regulate travel into Australia by specified classes of noncitizens who hold a temporary visa in circumstances where this is necessary to protect the integrity and sustainability—

Senator Shoebridge, do you have a point of order?

I can't hear a word. I don't think the mic's on. Maybe it doesn't want to be heard, but I can't hear it.

The TEMPORARY CHAIR: Senator Shoebridge, please withdraw the last part of your remarks.

I withdraw.

I'll try again. As I understand it, the amendments in this bill will establish a new legislative framework that provides the minister administering the Migration Act with powers to more effectively regulate travel into Australia by specified classes of noncitizens who hold a temporary visa in circumstances where this is necessary to protect the integrity and sustainability of Australia's migration system, including during periods of international conflict or in response to other events or circumstances outside Australia.
