Genetically Modified Crops

I, and also on behalf of Senators Wang and Day, move:

That the Senate recognises that:

(a) genetically modified crops have higher yields per hectare than conventional crops and therefore reduce the need for further land clearing;

(b) genetically modified crops generally require fewer pesticide applications and therefore reduce farming costs and the environmental impact of farming practices;

(c) further adoption of genetically modified crops will increase productivity for farmers and provide superior environmental benefits; and

(d) there is a need to maintain an independent, scientific based and evidence based regulatory regime for genetically modified crops.
