Paid Maternity Leave

I, and also on behalf of Senator Stott Despoja, move:

That the Senate—
(a)
notes that Australia and the United States of America are the only two Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries without a national paid maternity leave scheme;
(b)
congratulates marie claire for its ‘Push It’ campaign calling for mandatory paid maternity leave; and
(c)
calls on the Government to legislate for government-funded paid maternity leave.

by leave—Family First acknowledges that the issue of maternity leave is an important one not only for Australian mothers but for all women and Australian families. For this reason Family First believes it is important to have a full debate on paid maternity leave. It is more complex than a simple yes or no; we need a full debate before we make any decision on that.
