My question is to the Minister for Resources. How is the Albanese Labor government securing more Australian gas for households and businesses while supporting more manufacturing jobs, putting downward pressure on energy prices and boosting our economy?
Madeleine King Brand, Australian Labor Party, Minister for Northern Australia
I thank the member for Bendigo for her question. She is a great supporter of the mining and resources industry in her home town of Bendigo and across her whole electorate, which is vast. Today is a very significant day for Australia's energy security. Today, the first Australian national gas reservation scheme passed through this chamber. This is a landmark reform of this Albanese Labor government. The Albanese Labor government is getting on with the job of securing more Australian gas for Australian households, businesses and manufacturers. Australia has abundant gas resources and Australians should benefit from them. Australian households and industry should have access to the gas they need at affordable prices. That means reliable and plentiful energy for households, certainty for manufacturers and industry, and support for Australian jobs and investment. At its heart, this national gas reservation scheme is about making sure Australian gas delivers for Australians.
There are some steps remaining in delivering this scheme. When it goes to the other place, every single senator in that place will have the opportunity to support our landmark legislation establishing a long-term and enduring domestic gas reservation scheme, under which LNG exporters will be required to make a genuine contribution to the Australian market through a domestic supply obligation. It will be linked to their export volumes. The obligation will be flexible, with the Australian Energy Regulator able to calibrate the obligation to reflect the domestic demand, supply and market conditions. More gas available to Australian customers means a better supplied domestic market and downward pressure on prices.
I want to thank all the MPs in this chamber for their constructive engagement on this important reform. The problem of gas supply in this country has been recognised for some time and it has taken some time for a government to step up and take up the responsibility to fix it. And that is what this government is doing. This is a Labor government that gets things done. This is a Labor government that delivers and delivers for the Australian people. For years and years, across multiple governments and many parliaments, a national gas reservation scheme has been too hard—a bridge too far. But we have taken up the challenge. We have done the hard work and produced a gas reservation scheme that will deliver Australian gas for Australian people.
