House debates Questions without Notice

Trade with the European Union

Wednesday, 28 October 2026 House of Representatives

Matt Burnell

Matt Burnell Spence, Australian Labor Party

My question is to the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government. How will the Albanese Labor government's efforts to secure a free trade agreement with the European Union create new economic opportunities for regional Australia, particularly our farmers, producers and regional businesses?

Ms Catherine King Ballarat, Australian Labor Party, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government

I thank the member for Spence for the question. I acknowledge his tireless advocacy for his community and particularly those great areas that produce our wine, our food and, of course, our manufacturing. Stronger international trade relations can drive investment, expand market access and create new opportunities. The Australia-EU free trade agreement is a significant opportunity to open new markets, back our producers and create more jobs, particularly in our regions. The agreement opens doors for Australian farmers and producers to markets that have been difficult to access for decades. We've been trying to get this done for a long time.

It means that exporters will benefit from the elimination of EU tariffs. Almost 94 per cent of Australian agricultural exports by value will enter the EU duty free when the agreement takes effect, increasing to almost 95 per cent after seven years. This means new opportunities for our beef, sheepmeat, dairy, grains, horticultural seafood and wine products. For my home state of Victoria, this will make a big difference to small and large businesses alike, from dairy producers in Gippsland and south-west Victoria to winegrowers, farmers and food manufacturers across our regions.

It's about getting more Australian products into international markets and supporting the regional jobs that depend on them.

Order! I just asked the member for Gippsland to cease interjecting, and he keeps interjecting, so he'll have to leave the chamber under 94(a).

The member for Gippsland then left the chamber.

I'm trying to bring some order and decorum to this House. People are passionate about issues—I understand that—but that is not the way to handle yourself in the House. We've got to make sure we're doing better.

The agreement also delivers significant opportunities for Australian manufacturing and industry. From machinery and automotive components to advanced manufacturing and critical minerals, this agreement will help Australian businesses compete internationally. From Victoria's regional manufacturing centres, including Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo, stronger access to European markets means opportunities to grow, to diversify and to support local jobs in our hometowns. Regional Australia should not just produce the goods the world needs; it should share in the jobs, the investment and the growth that actually comes with them. That means stronger regional industries, more secure jobs and greater opportunities for the next generation.

While those opposite talk about supporting the regions, Labor is delivering real change, and the Australia-EU free trade agreement is proof of that. We're backing our farmers, our manufacturers and our exporters by reducing trade barriers and opening up access to new markets. That is what we have to do to grow those regional economies. We're strengthening Australia's international partnerships while supporting more investment here at home, and we're ensuring that regional Australia is ready to benefit from new investment in emerging industries and global demand, because, under this government, regional Australia won't be left behind. It is the centre of Australia's economic future and growth.
