Trade with the European Union
Dan Repacholi Hunter, Australian Labor Party

My question is to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. How will Australia's free trade agreement with the European Union benefit farmers and ensure they can export more of their world-class products?
Julie Collins Franklin, Australian Labor Party, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
I do want to thank our fabulous member for Hunter. I know he's a proud champion of the farmers and producers in his electorate and he understands how important exports are to our farmers—as, of course, does our government. We have been backing our farmers to succeed and to seize the new opportunities to export more of their high-quality produce right across the globe, and that's what our Australia-European Union free trade agreement will actually deliver.
Our agriculture exports to the EU were valued at $4 billion in 2025, and this agreement will see that trade grow. It removes the vast majority of EU agricultural tariffs, including $17 million in tariff savings on wine alone, as well most dairy and rice products, nuts, horticulture, honey, grains, processed foods and seafood. It will deliver preferential, guaranteed access of 35,000 tonnes of beef, a 700 per cent increase, and a 430 per cent increase for our sheepmeat, as well as, of course, duty-free access of over 44,000 tonnes of raw sugar. AUSVEG has said that this agreement will benefit Australia's growers through the elimination of tariffs on Australian vegetables into Europe. Its CEO Michael Coote said last week:
Australian vegetable growers need every market opportunity they can get right now, and the European FTA is one of those rare, and possibly never-to-be-repeated opportunities.
In what are globally uncertain times, this agreement is all about providing more certainty for Australian farmers. It's about ensuring our farmers can continue to have reliable trading partners and that they continue to benefit from two way trade. It is important for our farmers, particularly given, as I've said in this place, we export 80 per cent of our agricultural production value each and every year—we also know that more trade is good for regional jobs and good for regional communities, and I encourage those opposite to back the EU FTA.
I am proud to say our world-class producers are in more demand than ever. Our agriculture, fisheries and forestry exports reached a record value of $83 billion last financial year, and not only was this a record, but it represents a 63 per cent increase since we came into government—a 63 per cent increase backed by our government's work to restore some of our most important trading relationships. Of course, we've now delivered over 300 trade wins for Australian farmers and producers. On this side of the House, we'll continue to stand up for our farmers.
