My question is to the Minister representing the Minister for Industry and Innovation. How is the Albanese Labor government delivering economic opportunity for Australian industry, including through a once-in-a-generation Australian-European Union free trade agreement?

Pat Conroy

Pat Conroy Shortland, Australian Labor Party, Minister for Defence Industry

I thank the member for Bendigo, a proud manufacturing region. The truth is that the Albanese government is a proud champion of Aussie industry and we're committed to rebuilding our industrial base, and we're delivering. Since we came to government, manufacturing exports have grown by a massive 43 per cent. Manufacturing investment is up by 35 per cent, and there are many more manufacturing firms. All of this supports good blue-collar jobs, especially in regional communities, and there are many more great opportunities on the way.

The Australia-EU free trade agreement is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen our trade relationships with one of the world's largest economies, valued at $30 trillion. This agreement will open up access to a market of 450 million people, adding $10 billion to the Australian economy, and it will help grow the more than 340,000 Aussie jobs across the economy that already rely on the two-way trade with Europe. This is a huge opportunity for our world-class producers, farmers, businesses, exporters and workers, and it's great for industry, including Aussie manufacturing in particular.

It's also great news for the defence industry, and the good news is that we're already exporting leading-edge defence technology to the world. For example, Rheinmetall Defence Australia is producing more than 100 Aussie made Boxer heavy weapons carrier vehicles for the German army in a contract worth more than $1 billion to the Aussie economy. There's no doubt that the Australian defence industry will go from strength to strength under this agreement, as will the broader Australian manufacturing sector.

The truth is that this agreement will create opportunities for businesses to access global supply chains. It will increase our exports and help to attract investment in our businesses that already employ hundreds of thousands of Australians, and it'll open the door for greater industrial collaboration. It'll also help strengthen cooperation already happening under the new EU-Australia security and defence partnership. This will deepen our relationships and increase collaboration, and this means more jobs in Australia, more jobs in Aussie manufacturing and more jobs in our regions.

All of our trade agreements have been supported on a bipartisan basis because they've been in the Australian national interest. Sadly, the decades-long Australian bipartisan approach to trade policy is under threat because of those opposite. The truth is that, if you're pro jobs, you need to be pro the EU free trade agreement. And if you're opposed to the Australia-EU Free Trade agreement, you're anti jobs in this economy. So as we face trade winds globally, get behind this EU free trade agreement because it's good for jobs and it's good for Aussie manufacturing.
