David Farley Farrer, Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party

My question is to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Minister, Australia's population is projected to surpass 40 million by 2060. In regard to your contribution to the Intergenerational report, what specific and identified water security commitments have you secured for regional irrigated agriculture and the communities that depend upon it?
Julie Collins Franklin, Australian Labor Party, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
I thank the member for Farrer for his question, and I note that he does have a big interest particularly in water in regional communities. As I've indicated to the member before, this, of course, is the portfolio of the Minister for Environment and Water. As we have also discussed before, we certainly work very closely with the minister for water when it comes to making sure that agricultural production can continue in Australia and how important the Commonwealth levers are, particularly in relation to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. What I'd say to the member more broadly is that our government has been working on a food security strategy to make sure that we have safe, everyday essentials for Australians available at reasonable prices in terms of the food security strategy. It's a national food security strategy. It's the first time Australia has had one of these. We have been out consulting on the food security strategy. We've had literally hundreds of submissions and we've also stood up the National Food Council with expert members on it, and members on the Food Council are providing advice to the government in relation to the food security strategy. It was an election commitment that we made, and we know how important it is to make sure that Australians are able to access safe, affordable food.
Obviously in Australia we produce a lot of agricultural product. We hit the $100 billion four years early, but 80 per cent of that is exported in terms of value and 70 per cent in volume because Australia can produce 2½ times what Australians need, and we'll continue to work with the industry and with the sector to make sure we have food security for Australians.
