My question is to the Minister for Small Business. How is the Albanese Labor government delivering real change for Australia's 2.7 million small businesses?
Anne Aly Cowan, Australian Labor Party, Minister for International Development
Thank you to the member for Brisbane for her question and for her consistent advocacy for the small businesses in her electorate. Every small business starts with someone who has an idea and the courage to back themselves. It's the young tradie who decides to go out on his own or her own, the family recipe that's passed on through generations into a thriving business or the migrant who arrives in Australia and sets out to build something of their own. As I visit businesses in our cities and in our regions, in our suburbs and in our towns, I'm constantly awed by the passion and the steely determination that they exhibit.
Small business is a story of aspiration, and it's a story of Australia. That's just part of the reason why the Albanese Labor government is focused on delivering the settings that businesses need to start to grow and to succeed. We've made the $20,000 instant asset write-off and the two-year loss carry-back permanent. We've invested $80 million in digital solutions programs, the Small Business Cyber Resilience Service and the Cyber Health Check since we came into office. We're delivering $10.2 billion in regulatory burden reduction. We've removed almost 1,000 nuisance tariffs, saving businesses $157 million a year in compliance costs. 1½ million sole traders received tax cuts, including our $250 Working Australians Tax Offset. We've invested more than $30 million to improve payment times. Our fee-free TAFE is ensuring that small businesses have access to the skilled workers that they need to be able to continue to grow and to thrive.

Minister, pause for a moment. I want the interjections to cease. The minister is reading information to the House. The member for Brisbane's asked her question. These continual sledges and remarks and ongoing comments are not helpful to democracy, and it's not even funny. The minister is not saying anything controversial. We don't need commentary. We don't need remarks. We don't need snide remarks. Everyone, remember why we're here. We're not getting into the bad habits. People are entitled to their views, but not when ministers are just addressing the house on topics that we should all be supportive of. You can disagree but not with snide comments.

Those were just some of the measures that I mentioned in terms of what we're doing to improve those settings for small businesses so that they can start up, they can grow and they can sustain. One of the primary things that we're doing as well is continuing to work with states and territories through our National Small Business Strategy, the first of its kind. We're working with them, meeting with them regularly to look at how we can continue to do those things and reduce regulatory burden and cut red tape. When a small business succeeds, that success doesn't just stop at the shopfront or at the check-out; it's another apprentice getting their start, another Australian earning a wage and another Australian building a dream. That's what we're backing—an Australia where good ideas become great businesses, hard work creates opportunity, and ambition has every chance to succeed.
