House debates Questions without Notice
Prime Minister

My question is to the Prime Minister. On 9 September 2026, the Prime Minister told this House his $6 million taxpayer funded grant to Marrickville Golf Club was to fix sewerage flows into the Cooks River. On 10 September 2026, the Prime Minister doubled down on this claim in this House. Last week, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts confirmed to a Senate inquiry that sewerage works were not in the scope of the $6 million grant. This was confirmed again at Senate estimates last night. Will the Prime Minister give Australians a straight answer, admit he misled the house and correct the record?

What I'll do is answer the question. The delivery of the grant is, of course, a matter for the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts. The Inner West Council confirmed to last week's Senate inquiry that they are currently finalising the design of the entire project, including improvements to the clubhouse, stormwater harvesting, a new toilet and landscaping. This is a grant to Inner West Council as a result of an election commitment made on 27 April 2025 as part of the renovation of the clubhouse to boost the health of the Cooks River, at which the building and securing the Marrickville Golf Club precinct announcement was made. Sewerage issues are a longstanding concern on this site. I'm advised that in September 2025—that is, after we had made the commitment—the New South Wales government committed funding towards the sewerage related aspects of the club. That is investment which is welcome.

I'm stating the facts of what is happening, and the New South Wales government are funding—
Milton Dick Speaker
The members on my left will cease interjecting. The Prime Minister was asked a specific question by the manager. He was heard in silence. The Prime Minister is directly addressing the question he was asked, as he said he would answer the question. I'd like the House to show respect to the Prime Minister, as the manager was shown, and listen to the advice given to the House by the Prime Minister.

The New South Wales government is funding the sewerage related aspects of the club, which has been an issue for a very long time. I'm advised that the club has a long history, and indeed, in the media release announcing the project, it spoke about the venue's last major remodel being in 1947. This is a local club owned by the council, par 62. The funding was going to be for sewerage. The New South Wales government have stepped in, which is appropriate, given that New South Wales run water and sewerage. It was an election commitment, similar to the member for Wannon's 23 election commitments that were made totalling a value of $26.3 million.

I seek leave to table the transcript from Senate estimates last night which says that sewerage is not a component of this grant.
Leave not granted.
