Sunday 1 November is a huge anniversary for Medicare and bulk-billing in this country. It is 12 months since our government expanded bulk-billing incentives to all Australian patients, meaning any Australian, if their doctor chooses to bulk-bill them—they will not pay a gap fee. It is also the anniversary of when—if the entire clinic decided to go to a 100 per cent bulk-billing model, they too received a boost payment. These changes have had a huge impact on my electorate. Bulk-billing rates have surged. We have now hit the target of nine out of 10 of all GP visits being bulk-billed. That's in the less than 12 months since we expanded these incentives. It's a phenomenal outcome. We now have clinics in our electorate that are back to opening seven days a week so that people can see a GP in their clinic on a Saturday or a Sunday. Again, this is as a result of the changes that we have made.
This is what our government is doing to invest in Medicare and health care. Yes, it's a cost-of-living measure. It says to people, 'It doesn't matter what's in your bank account; you can see the GP when you need to.' But, more importantly, it is a health outcome, ensuring that people in my electorate and in all of our electorates, can see a GP regardless of what is in their bank accounts. It's a huge day for us—1 November. This Sunday, we'll celebrate what we've done for bulk-billing.
