Young Australians: Bullying
Julian Leeser Berowra, Liberal Party, Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians
1:42 pm
Today, I want to talk about an extraordinary mother and an extraordinary advocate, Clare McCann. Clare suffered the tragedy of losing her beautiful son, Atreyu, to suicide after he was horrifically bullied at school. I know the pain that families suffer when a member of the family dies by suicide. The grief and sadness never leave you, but to lose a child must be unimaginably hard. Atreyu was just 13 years old—just 13—so it's all the more extraordinary that, in the grief and sadness, Clare has found the strength to do something about it. She's designed an antibullying program. It's a four-strike program with escalating consequences. And she went to the people. She started a petition, and it's been tabled in this parliament with 5,000 signatures.
I'm not an expert in antibullying, but I know that, when 5,000 Australians say we as a parliament should do something, it behoves us to listen. As of this afternoon, Clare McCann's petition is on the desk of the Minister for Education. I'm asking the minister to give it a fair run. We worked together to set up an inquiry into boys' education through the House education committee. When that inquiry is done, let's work together again. Let's send Clare McCann's proposal to a parliamentary inquiry. Let her and others tell their stories publicly. Let's give these issues the scrutiny they deserve and test her ideas alongside other models like the rapid review. Let's find the best way forward for the sake of the memory of Atreyu and for the memory and future of all Australian children.
