Hunter Electorate: Wine Industry

I've said it before and I'll say it again, and you've heard me say this: the Hunter Valley is the best wine region in Australia. I know there might be a few members in this place from South Australia, from Victoria—like you, Deputy Speaker Aldred—or from Western Australia who want to argue with me on that, but the stats don't lie, the trophies don't lie and neither do the experts. The 2026 Halliday Wine Companion Top 100 Wineries have just been announced, and an incredible nine wineries from the Hunter Valley made that list. That's nine. It's nine local wineries recognised amongst the very best producers in this entire country. If that's not enough, Tyrrell's Wines has been ranked No. 2 in Australia—No. 2 in the entire country. What an outstanding achievement for one of the Hunter's most iconic family owned businesses! I want to congratulate all nine wineries recognised this year: Tyrrell's Wines, Brokenwood Wines, Mount Pleasant Wines, Lake's Folly, Pooles Rock, Thomas Wines, Margan Wines. First Creek Wines and Silkman Wines. Every single one of them deserves a massive pat on the back.
But these awards aren't just about what's in the bottle; they're about the hardworking people behind the scenes: the grapegrowers, the winemakers, the cellar door staff, the hospitality workers and the families who have poured their hearts and souls into building the Hunter Valley's reputation. They're the people getting up early, working long hours and putting in the hard yards to produce some of the finest wines anywhere in the world, and they're doing it right in our backyard in the Hunter.
The Hunter Valley has been producing wine for more than 200 years. It's one of Australia's oldest wine regions, and generations of families have helped build an industry that we're incredibly proud of. From our world-famous semillon to our outstanding shiraz, the Hunter has something pretty special going for it, and it's not just about the wine. Our vineyards bring visitors from across Australia and around the world, supporting local accommodation, restaurants, tourism operators and small businesses. That's jobs, investment and opportunities in our regional communities.
Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a pretty partial and parochial bloke when it comes to the Hunter Valley and Hunter Valley wines. But, when we've got nine wineries in the top 100 and one sitting at No. 2, I reckon we've got every reason to be. So congratulations to everyone involved. Keep producing outstanding wines, keep collecting those trophies and keep showing the rest of Australia how it's done. And remember the Hunter Valley is the best wine region in Australia, hands down. Thank you to everyone who enjoys a bottle of Hunter Valley wine tonight.
