'Bent but not broken', I think, is a description that describes all of us in this place after a week of unimaginable violence which saw not only the member for Indi run down while doing her job but also, to national attention, a drive-by shooting in the heart of my electorate, in Loganholme, on Saturday night which has left a 19-year-old woman fighting for her life in hospital and three young men injured but, as I understand it, in a stable condition. So the first thing I want to say is to that 19-year-old woman and to the family and friends of that young woman: I just hope you pull through—hope against hope. I believe that you can make this. And, when you come through this, I will want to be there to hear from you and to support you.

For everybody who was there that night, that trauma will last a long time. There is something in the paper I have here which I want to read out:

One witness said that the shooting happened right in front of his 10-year-old son.

"My son and his friends went for a walk and as they walked out the front it all happened,' he said.

"Could have been any of the kids. My son saw the man in front of him get shot."

"His words, he saw a glass get shot out of his hand and smash."

The people who witnessed what they saw on Saturday night are heroes, and they should know that coming forward for help is strength and they should know that that help is available. To all of the first responders who were there—to all of the people who, in fact, ran towards the bullets and helped those who are injured on the spot; to the first responders who showed up to help: thank you. To the police, who are doing their hardest to catch these criminals: thank you. I'm confident that they will and that the people who perpetrated this unimaginable crime will be brought to justice.

'Bent but not broken'—it's the human condition, the Australian condition, but also the condition of people in Logan, working-class people, who know adversity from inside and out. They will rise above this and will be stronger for this. And to them I say: We will get through this. The emotion right now is so high, and so tough to take, but we'll get through this, and we'll be better for it.
