One of the best things about representing Paterson is there's never a shortage of people who give you reason to burst with pride for our community. Whether it's a young local taking on the world, businesses making their mark on the world or volunteers quietly changing our world, we've got some terrific people right here in our backyard, and I want to recognise a few of them today.
First is Connor Beisler from Maitland. At just 21 years of age, Connor recently represented Australia at the WorldSkills competition as part of our Skillaroos team, competing against some of the best young tradespeople in the world, and he came seventh, bringing home a Medal of Excellence in baking. You could smell the croissants through the photographs that I saw. Good on you, Connor! Keep that dough rising, mate.
We've got some outstanding local businesses making their mark as well, and the Business Hunter Awards recently recognised Whiteley. They're medical and chemical manufacturers, and they were recognised for excellence in international business. This Australian owned company which I've visited many times is taking infection prevention and hygiene expertise to 35 markets around the world. It's a terrific example of the innovation happening right here, in Paterson.
Oakvale Wildlife Park took home the outstanding visitor experience award. Anyone who has taken the kids out there knows what a wonderful part of Port Stephens it is. I remember taking my youngest there just on 22 years ago, and the animals are even cuter now than they seemed back then. Stay a little longer and come back soon, as they say.
The Burton Automotive Group was recognised for its contribution to the region. It's a family owned business that has been part of our community since 1962. Norm Sr Burton and his family have supported local causes and events, including Ronald McDonald House and Hunter Valley Steamfest, for years. But, more importantly, they've been delivering reliable motor vehicles for all of us to travel across our great region. These businesses are doing more than keeping the doors open. They're creating jobs, they're supporting our regions and they're giving back to our community.
Finally, I want to recognise two people who remind us just how much our community relies on volunteers. Lisa Lodding took out the 2026 adult volunteer of the year award, and David Aselford took out the Hunter emergency volunteer of the year award. Lisa and David, you are fantastic. You two are making such wonderful contributions to our local community. Thank you for that.
