On 13 July, this nation lost a larger-than-life character—Ewen Jones, the former member for Herbert. But it's his bravery and courage and the love that was shown to him during the death sentence he had with cancer that I'd like to mention today—the bravery and courage he showed going down the aisle to his daughter's wedding, being pushed by Andrew and holding Abbie's hand, blind in both eyes but with a huge smile on his face. He sat there while his daughter Emma gave the speech that he had hoped to give during that wedding, smiling and nodding in appreciation at the great job that she did. There was the love and the banter between him and Linda as they faced those final couple of weeks. They knew that the end was coming, but their love was shining and making that end far better than it could have been. His mother, Hilary, was heartbroken. She was not able to attend the funeral, but she knew that he'd been loved right to the end. His brothers, Stewart and Graeme, also were there by his side. It was love that all of us could only hope for as you face a death sentence like cancer, and I am positive that that love will ensure he rests in peace.

on indulgence—Just briefly on behalf of the government we associate ourselves with the fine words of the member for Wannon. Ewen Jones was someone who was known to those of us who served with him as someone of good spirit, someone absolutely dedicated to his electorate and someone who was a good bloke and was good fun to be around. He's someone who had a great deal of friends across this parliament, and on behalf of the government and the Australian Labor Party I express my condolences to his family and friends and to his political party.
