Over the duration of the pandemic, I've witnessed extraordinary acts of kindness and generosity by residents of my electorate. At its core, it represents the vibrant spirit of volunteerism, which continues to thrive in our community, despite the difficult and challenging circumstances that have been thrust upon us. I've seen the incredible work of individuals who so often, through their own initiative, go above and beyond to support their neighbours in the time of crisis that we've experienced. Of course, I've also seen the incredible work of local community organisations across the full spectrum of activities, from the major national ones, like Vinnies and the Salvos, to local ones, like our community centres.

Volunteering is the cornerstone of every community. That's why I was delighted that last year, in December, after a brief COVID hiatus the year before, I was able to host my annual North Sydney Community Awards, which I've run every year—except for the last—since my election to parliament. These awards seek to celebrate and acknowledge those incredible individuals and groups whose efforts have contributed to making North Sydney a more compassionate and caring community. Today I'd like to highlight some of the winners of the major prizes at those awards and acknowledge their service.

The North Sydney Citizen of the Year award went to Liz Mackinlay for her dedication, time and involvement in the establishment and continuing governance, as chair, of Mary's House, an organisation which provides such important support to women and children fleeing domestic violence. Liz has contributed her services since 2015 and is an outstanding leader.

The North Sydney Older Person of the Year was awarded to John Hayward. John has made a significant contribution to the Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club over many decades, including in 2018, when he demonstrated exemplary leadership when the club was attacked by arsonists.

The North Sydney Young Person of the Year award went to not just one but many of the amazing youth ambassadors of the Sustainable Sports Program, which had its genesis at the Northbridge Football Club and is making a real difference by reducing waste and encouraging environmental practices amongst our young footballers.

The North Sydney Sport Achievement Award was presented to Rory Grace for his significant contribution to Northbridge Football Club, where he has been president for so many years, and the North Sydney Community Group of the Year was given to LifeSource Community Foodcare, who provide food and other basic groceries to people who are disadvantaged, on a pension or just doing it tough. The LifeSource Christian Church, which operates the food bank, does an incredible job, and I was proud to be able to volunteer with them during the pandemic to see that firsthand.

I want to offer my congratulations and my sincerest thanks to all our winners—in fact, 61 of them—and those who nominated them for their work. You are making our community a stronger one. I know all residents are proud of and thankful for the contribution that you're making every day of the year.
