I wish to thank the Minister for Revenue and Financial Services and Minister for Women, the Hon. Kelly O'Dwyer, for visiting my electorate in July to address the networking meeting of the Joondalup Business Association. The event, at the Over Board Cafe in Hillarys, was well attended by more than 40 local business people and local government represents from the city of Joondalup. The issues discussed included regulation of the superannuation industry and general corporate governance issues under the remit of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. The issue of the new educational requirements for financial planners was raised and how this reform would be best implemented across the industry, taking into account the significant industry experience of long-serving financial planners. A constituent called for stricter penalties for negligent fund managers in the wake of the financial collapse of the Addwealth Achiever Fund, Richmond Equity Fund and Entertainment Fund, with several local retirees losing their retirements savings. It was pleasing to see a number of professional women in attendance, whom the minister and I encouraged to consider getting involved in the Liberal party. A portfolio in the areas of treasury, economics and finance was topical for JBA members, and I wish to thank the president, Max Wilson, and executive officer, Teresa Ritchie, for organising the event.
