On Saturday, 21 July I attended the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club annual dinner, hosted by the very witty Ali Baird, with my state colleagues Corey Wingard, David Speirs, Holdfast Bay mayor Amanda Wilson and councillor Karen Donaldson. Club president Chris Parsons reported on another very successful season, which included almost 6,000 patrol hours and nine rescues. On top of this, the club hosted sculptures by the sea; the Brighton Jetty Classic, which is South Australia's largest open water swim; and the Australian Open Water Swimming Championships. The success of these events is a huge credit to the club, and these events are only possible thanks to the hard work and commitment of the club's volunteers. In fact, the club has calculated that the cost of paying these volunteers for their time would be around $250,000 a year. That's why I was delighted to help the club secure funding for solar panels to reduce power costs so the money they raise can be spent on keeping volunteers and beach users safe rather than paying power bills.

On behalf of my community, I thank the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club for everything they do to make the beach a safe and enjoyable place—and a very special mention to Des Staite, who coordinates the four o'clock swim and has clocked up 49 years of service to the club, and also to Craig Caldicott, Richard Warren and Kevin Watkins for achieving 50 years of service each. Congratulations to these incredible volunteers and everyone at the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club for all they do for our community.
