I rise to talk about the death of a great man from the town of St George by the name of Terry Parer. While he did not live in my electorate, the member for Maranoa, Bruce Scott, wishes to be associated with these words spoken in his honour. Sadly, Terry Parer died on Saturday, 20 September. He was the much loved husband of Jenny, who used to be a Delahunty, a famous chemist family in Brisbane. Terry Parer was a chemist in the town of St George for many, many years. Terry was the father of six children, the youngest being Mark, then Bernard, Sophie, Simon, Phillip and Margie. Terry was a great inspiration for me growing up in a family without a dad. He was, as I said, a chemist in the town but was also a great worker for the community. He was a great worker in the Catholic Church. Many of Terry’s kids were in the same classes at school as some of my family. He also inspired me to take up running at a young age, because he took up marathon running at a very old age. More importantly, his daughter Margie was murdered. She was murdered by someone who had been in prison previously for murder, came out and was rehabilitated. Terry was such a generous guy that he hired the former prisoner. He showed me that he had a belief in redemption— (Time expired)
