Congratulations to the new WA state member for Rockingham, Magenta Marshall, who won the seat with an excellent 65.2 per cent two-party preferred margin on Saturday. Magenta Marshall is a Rockingham local born and raised, her first job being at the Rockingham City Football Club. The new member knows she has big shoes to fill after the retirement of Premier Mark McGowan, the most popular premier in Australia's history, and she has approached the task with humility, seriousness and vigour, knocking on thousands of doors over the short six-week campaign. Magenta Marshall is competent and driven and exemplifies Labor values. I am grateful for her expertise in guiding my own campaign. She will be a highly capable and relentless advocate for the people of Rockingham. She is the first woman to represent Rockingham, and her win brings the WA Legislative Assembly to virtual gender parity, with 29 of the 59 seats now held by women. She's also the youngest current member of the WA parliament, underscoring the WA Labor Party's commitment to generational change.

It was another bad result for the moribund WA Liberal Party, who, just like the federal coalition, still need to learn that rebuilding support requires good policy formulation and hard work, not just being consistently negative. I look forward to working closely with Magenta Marshall, Premier Roger Cook and the rest of the Labor team in WA to continue delivering good policy outcomes for Western Australians.
