I'm trying to be brave, but I feel very sad. Our much-loved pioneer Margaret Cockman OAM, freeman of the cities of Wanneroo and Joondalup, sadly passed away last week aged 92. Margaret was a close friend, confidante and mentor, always with an opinion and not shy about voicing it. She was a caring, vibrant and beautiful lady who was absolutely fearless and formidable when standing up for everything that was important to her, which was most things. Margaret lived her entire life in the Wanneroo area and was the keeper of much of our history. Close friends recall working through 23 large archive boxes with information dating back before 1927, when she was born. Her collection now resides with the Wanneroo Regional Museum and will play a very important role in helping our future generations to understand the history of our region.

Margaret's strong, proud and pioneering spirit was inspirational, as was her fierce protection for all things Wanneroo. Margaret shared her wisdom, and we regularly held hands as we shared our breast cancer journeys and supported each other. She was a well-known ambassador for the Cancer Council's Joondalup and Wanneroo relay for life. Margaret's love for her family, friends and community was clear for all to see. I send my condolences to her sister, Maude; nieces, Michelle and Debbie; and all the family. She will be greatly missed by us all and will continue to hold a very special place in the hearts of the Pearce community.
